The bus doors swing open and sneakers scurry towards the school entrance. Instead of a cold metal door handle, students are ushered inside with high fives and smiles from staff. Later, when a family can’t attend the open house, they still receive a recap video, community flyer, and a personal message from the teacher offering another time to connect.

That’s a strong school culture.

It isn’t built by a single person in a single moment. It is a collective energy and movement executed by everyone and felt everywhere.

The importance of school culture

School culture is the shared values, traditions and routines that shape how the community learns and thrives. Too often, it’s seen as something that teachers create within the four walls of the classroom. The truth is, culture is much bigger than that. It’s in the way leaders set priorities, how families are engaged, how staff feel supported, and how the community shows up.

Culture is also shaped by challenges inside and around the classroom.

  • A lack of belonging among students could stem from chronic absenteeism.
  • Distrust between families and schools might grow when communication breaks down.
  • Staff burnout and turnover can weaken needed consistency.

But every challenge is an opportunity. When everyone collectively rallies around a shared goal, culture begins to shift. And students feel the difference.

Simple steps to strengthen school culture

The most effective culture shifts are built through consistent, everyday actions and partnerships that invite families and staff to participate. Here are simple steps for inside and around the classroom that can impact culture without being overwhelming.

Inside the classroom:

  • Build trust with daily two-way communication.
  • Give families a clear role in supporting learning at home.
  • Affirm families as the “student experts” while positioning teachers as “learning experts.”
  • Share quick snapshots of classroom moments so families can celebrate progress with their child.

Around the school community:

  • Send short weekly updates about what’s happening and how families can support.
  • Celebrate progress and culture wins with families and the community.
  • Showcase moments where families and staff collaborated to solve challenges.
  • Use short surveys to ask for family feedback, then share how you will act on their input.

Claim the school culture you want to build

As a district leader, it can feel overwhelming: identifying a place to start. Instead of focusing on what is broken, rally your community around what you want to build.

This quote from our recent TalkingPoints webinar captured it perfectly:

“Claim the culture you want to build. It’s more important than naming the culture you want to eliminate.” – Kate Pechacek, Founder and CEO of OpendoorsEd.

When leaders name the positive culture-building opportunity they want to aim for, families and staff see themselves as part of the shared solution. Momentum steadily grows when everyone participates in a sustainable, inclusive, and impactful culture.
